Multiplying Strategies

Today we started the day with a game of Finding Doubles. Students played the game and then discussed our observations. We found out that we were doing repeated addition and that this was the same as multiplying.

We used the facts that we know from Finding Doubles to circle the facts on the Multiplication Chart.

We also worked on the following problem and discussed the different strategies that we used.
Alyssa had a garden with 5 rows in it.
There were 4 tomato plants in each row.
How many tomato plants were in her garden all together?

These are the strategies that we saw in our classmates work today. Here is a problem you can try at home to work on your strategies.

In a store, there are 4 rows of comedy videos and 2 rows of cartoon videos. There are 6 videos in each row.
How many videos are there in all?

How many different strategies can you use to help you solve the question?
