Story Ideas

We have been working on developing story ideas. Please post your story idea and remember to include your name at the top of it. You can check the rubric we created to make sure you are on the right track.

Sleeping Dilema

Last night Emma slept for 7 hours. Owen slept for 400 minutes.
Who slept longer?
How much longer did they sleep?

Don't let the rain get you down!

Faith shows in this picture how we can use the WAIT model to help us to deal with problems (like  someone calling you a name or bothering you while you are working) when they happen.

These students are showing pictures of the WAIT model. Do you remember what each of the letters stand for?

At the bottom of each post there is a small tool bar. It looks like this

Multiplication with Stamps

Today we looked at different groupings of stamps. We used a variety of strategies to figure out how much each stamp set was worth.
We determined that repeated addition on its own could take a very long time to do, and it wasn't very efficient. Instead, students began to group the stamp values together before using repeated addition.

Try making your own set of stamps at home and calculating how much they would be worth. Try to figure out how much a group of 8 stamps would cost if each stamp was worth 3 cents.

Who Wants to Be a Millionare Third-Grader???

This morning we tried out some new 'Smart' technology and used clickers to answer some multiple choice math questions. We learned to look out for 'trickster' answers in each question (ones that at a quick glance, look like the obvious answer, but they really aren't). Many of us got tricked on the 'Emma - Owen' question 5+5+5=         x 5. Ask your child to explain how this question has anything to do with Emma and Owen! They could type a comment explaining their thinking so we can post it on our blog.

Love was in the air!

We had a wonderful Valentine's Day in our class today. Thankyou to all who brought special treats and cards. During art today, students learned about the painting technique 'impasto' and experimented with it to created beautiful pictures.
Tomorrow we will be looking at how the multiplication table was made and how that can help us understand how to multiply.

Structures

Today we were building  tall and stable towers by our self  using certin meterials. Sometimes it was challing because it would fall during moments. Some towers fell but we never gave up. Some were made by truces some were made squars and some were strait. We needed to make a base to keep it up and not to fall. but at least it was fun.

New!! You Can Comment!

I've finally figured out how to add the comment feature to the blog. It won't pop up right away, but now you can add a comment about posts on the blog. Please be sure to include your name so that we know who is sharing their thinking. If you have ideas about Roxie's Riddle that was posted a while back, you could start with that.
Thanks!

Mr. Peabody's Apples

Today we read Mr. Peabody's Apples and discussed the main problem in the story. The students had many great ideas about what the feathers in the pillow represented and how this was tied to the solution in the story. Ask your child to talk to you about how rumors are like feather pillows.

Multiplying Strategies

Today we started the day with a game of Finding Doubles. Students played the game and then discussed our observations. We found out that we were doing repeated addition and that this was the same as multiplying.

We used the facts that we know from Finding Doubles to circle the facts on the Multiplication Chart.

We also worked on the following problem and discussed the different strategies that we used.
Alyssa had a garden with 5 rows in it.
There were 4 tomato plants in each row.
How many tomato plants were in her garden all together?

These are the strategies that we saw in our classmates work today. Here is a problem you can try at home to work on your strategies.

In a store, there are 4 rows of comedy videos and 2 rows of cartoon videos. There are 6 videos in each row.
How many videos are there in all?

How many different strategies can you use to help you solve the question?

Phil and Sally, Back in Business!!

The threes did a fantastic job on their presentation for the respect assembly today. Their hard practice paid off! Here are a few pictures of some of the stars of the day! Maybe we'll take a step away from the eighties and tackle "The View" next time!!

Music to Our Ears

We have been learning about the notes on the keyboard. This is one of the first songs our class learned to play.  (I'm not sure why it comes out sideways??? I'm working on fixing it.)

Updates

Assembly
Preparations are well underway for our assembly on Friday. The students have done a great job working on scripts and props. We are looking for a large pair of red framed glasses for one of our characters. If you happen to have a pair at home that we can borrow, it would be greatly appreciated.

Weather
Check the school or HWDSB website for updates. Please make sure that students have appropriate outdoor wear (boots, snowpants, coats, gloves and hats). We are looking forward to a fun game of snow soccer.

Reading
This week we are focusing on identifying the important characters and main problems in our reading. Encourage your child to do this in their at home reading, or even discuss it after watching a show or movie.

Grouping- Arrays, Arrays and More Arrays

Today we learned about arrays. An array must be organized in columns and rows, and must be in the shape of a rectangle or square. We made many math sentences about how we grouped our array.
If we made an array with 12 blocks, some of the sentences could be:
12 / 2 = 6
2 of 6 = 12   OR    2 x 6 = 12
12 - 6 - 6 = 0
6 + 6 = 12
